Plot summary

The story of Bajirao and Mastani

The movie begins with Bajirao (played by Ranveer Singh), a young and ambitious Maratha general, being appointed as the Peshwa by the Maratha king Shahu (played by Mahesh Manjrekar). Bajirao is married to Kashibai (played by Priyanka Chopra), a loving and supportive wife who is proud of his achievements.

Bajirao's first mission as the Peshwa is to help Raja Chhatrasal (played by Benjamin Gilani), the ruler of Bundelkhand, who is under attack by the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah (played by Raza Murad). Bajirao arrives in Bundelkhand with his army and meets Chhatrasal's daughter Mastani (played by Deepika Padukone), who is also a skilled fighter. Bajirao is impressed by Mastani's courage and beauty, and helps her defeat the Mughals.

As a token of gratitude, Chhatrasal offers Mastani's hand in marriage to Bajirao. Bajirao accepts the offer without realizing that it is a serious proposal. He gives Mastani his dagger as a symbol of his protection and leaves for Pune, his hometown.

Mastani, however, falls in love with Bajirao and follows him to Pune. She faces hostility and discrimination from Bajirao's family and court, who consider her a low-born Muslim concubine. Bajirao's mother Radhabai (played by Tanvi Azmi) refuses to accept Mastani as her daughter-in-law and confines her to a separate palace. Bajirao's brother Chimaji Appa (played by Vaibhav Tatwawaadi) tries to kill Mastani several times. Bajirao's first wife Kashibai is heartbroken by her husband's betrayal but tries to maintain her dignity and grace.

Bajirao, however, remains loyal and devoted to Mastani. He declares his love for her in front of his court and builds a new palace for her called Mastani Mahal. He also gives her the title of "Mastani Bai", which means "Mastani the Queen". He defends her from his enemies and protects her from harm. He also treats her son Krishna Rao (played by Ayush Tandon) as his own.

The challenges and conflicts they face

Bajirao and Mastani's love story faces many challenges and conflicts from both internal and external forces. Some of them are:

  • The religious differences between them: Bajirao is a Hindu Brahmin, while Mastani is a Muslim Rajput. Their relationship is seen as a sin and an insult by both communities. They are also accused of being traitors to their faiths and their nations.

  • The political rivalries between them: Bajirao is the leader of the Maratha Empire, while Mastani is the daughter of a former enemy of the Marathas. Their relationship is seen as a threat and a weakness by their opponents. They are also targeted by various enemies, such as the Mughals, the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Portuguese, and the British.
